D-backs’ Zac Gallen donates 2,300 gallons of milk to St. Mary’s Food Bank
PHOENIX (AZFamily) — Arizona Diamondbacks ace Zac Gallen lived up to his nickname as “The Milkman” by making a huge donation to a Valley food bank!
On Thursday, Gallen brought a Shamrock truck filled with 2,300 gallons of milk to St. Mary’s Food Bank, ensuring that kids and families have access to fresh milk this summer. Gallen chose to donate 2,300 gallons to match his jersey number — No. 23.
“I joked around like, ‘This is a lot better than sitting on my couch at home,’” Gallen said, chuckling. “It’s better to get out here, get out in the community, meet some new people, do something that’s good for the community. It’s a lot of fun.”
Gallen joined the Diamondbacks in 2019 as part of a trade with the Miami Marlins in exchange for Jazz Chisholm Jr. During his tenure with Arizona, Gallen has participated in many community events, such as visiting Valley schools and hosting food drives.
“I don’t think that I would have thought seven years ago that this place would become home for me. I kind of bounced around with a couple trades, been in a lot of different places with minor league ball. When I got traded here, I didn’t know what to expect. Now it’s been seven years, and I wouldn’t have it any other way,” he said. “I love being engrained in this community.”
Statistics from Feeding America show that one in five Arizona children have limited or no access to food, with summer months particularly challenging due to summer break.
“The Milkman” has been a longtime supporter and partner of Shamrock Farms. Last year, he and the company launched the Gallen Gallon, a gallon sized jug of Shamrock’s protein shake.
