TUCSON, Ariz. (13 News) - The Pima County Sheriff’s Department says one of the victims from last week’s Goodwill shooting has died.

30-year-old Juan Cristobal Flores died this morning, January 1, at 7:00, according to the PCSD.

The PCSD says the investigation is now being treated as a homicide.

The updated information will be forwarded to the Pima County Attorney’s Office seeking appropriate homicide-related charges.

The family released a statement following the announcement of Juan’s passing.

It says: “With profound sorrow and faith, we share that Juan Cristobal Flores has gone to rest in God’s eternal embrace. Juan fought courageously for his life after being shot while working at a Goodwill donation center. He was a gifted opera singer, a servant-hearted soul, and a beloved son, cousin and friend whose light touched so many. His beautiful voice, which brought hope and grace to countless hearts, was silenced by crime-but his spirit will never be silenced. Though our hearts are broken, we trust that Juan is now at peace, surrounded by divine love. We are deeply grateful to everyone who prayed, showed up, and stood with us. We need the continued support of our community to ensure justice is served. We will not rest until that day comes.”

Friends and family of Flores held a vigil Tuesday night to show support for him.

“I want him to come out of this. And him to be there, and be able to still call him. I want that so bad,” said Jackson Veneklasen, Flores’ friend.

Following the news of Orozco’s arrest, Flores’ parents were unable to attend the vigil Tuesday night.

“Every parent in the world is probably feeling the same. When they think about, what if that was their child?” said Abigail Juganaru, friend of Flores.

Those in attendance spoke on who Flores is, and many praised his character and faith.

While also sharing their thoughts and prayer for Flores and his family and also called for a safer city.

“Just so blessed and thankful. You changed my life,” said another friend of Flores.

“He has never done wrong for anybody. The only thing he ever did was good, mom. How can somebody be so mean and do this to my friend?” an attendee shared what her son said after hearing what happened to Flores.

Orozco has been booked into the Pima County Adult Detention Complex and faces multiple felony charges, including two counts of second-degree attempted murder, two counts of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, two counts of aggravated assault causing serious physical injury, one count of auto theft and one count of armed robbery.

“It was very, very difficult to see, to see this animal smiling,” said Flores’ cousin Angie Atondo.

She joined the vigil right after Orozco appeared in court Tuesday evening, where his bond was set at $1 million cash only.

His next court appearance was set for January 9.

Atondo spoke about his appearance and the family’s frustrations with his behavior.

“To see him trying to talk to the judge justifying himself,” Atondo said. “Trying to say something. What can you say?”

Atondo also asked the community to continue to support them as they continue to fight for justice.

The Flores family has set up a GoFundMe in Juan’s name to help with medical expenses.
