TUCSON, AZ (Tucson News Now) - Community members heard from Tucson Unified School District leaders about the progress of the school district's five-year strategic plan at a meeting Saturday.

TUSD Superintendent, Dr. H.T. Sanchez, said the strategic plan focuses on 5 critical areas: curriculum, communication, diversity, facilities and finance.

Parents who attended also had the opportunity to provide school district officials with recommendations on how the school can better improve its progress towards the strategic plan approved unanimously by the TUSD school board in July.

TUSD's strategic plan meeting for the community occurred just as school district officials announced TUSD could be a facing a deficit of up to $15 million for the upcoming school year.

Dr. Sanchez said the strategic plan is also designed to work even with possible budget shortfalls.

"I don't feel the strategic plan is in any jeopardy with any kind of shortfall when you take a look at the integrity of the plan," Dr. Sanchez said Saturday. "It really lays out processes and efficiencies that will help in any type of shortfall and identify ways to save funds and streamline processes and that's a key piece of the strategic plan."
